Jamie Costin, from Ballycreen went to scoil in SN Baile Mhic Airt and then to secondary school in Dungarvan. He is a member of the West Waterford Athletics and is often seen walking to local roads.
The 2004 Athens Olympics were to be the finest hour in the career of West Waterford race-walker Jamie Costin. With the years of hard work and sacrifice behind him, Costin was quietly confident of a really good performance at the Athens Olympics. But then with all the work completed and just days to go before the Jamie’s big day in the 50km walk, disaster struck. On a Tuesday morning Jamie was returning to the Irish camp after a morning training session when he was involved in a car crash. He had just dropped off his training partner and Olympic legend, Robert Korzeniowski, when he was involved in serious collision with a lorry. In an instant Jamie’s Olympic dream was in tatters but the repercussions could have been far worse than that.
Thankfully the damage was not as bad as it could have been and Jamie is now focussing on the road to recovery and amazingly the way back to competitive race walking. Many may have thrown in the towel but not Jamie Costin
While training for the longest endurance event on the athletics programme, Jamie averages up to 115 miles a week, broken into twice daily sessions with one day off every 14 days. In preparation for 50km his longest training session is 25 miles which he carries out on a weekly basis.
This year he is competing in the 50km walk in the Beijing Olympics and we would like to wish him all the best.
Go n-éirí an t-ádh leat Jamie
D’fhreastail Jamie Costin, ó Bhaile Uí Churraoin ar SN Baile Mhic Airt, agus ansin ar an meánscoil I nDún Garbháin. Tá se ina bhall de Chumann Lúthchleas Iarthar Phort Láirge, agus tá sé le feiscint go minic ag siúl ar na bóithre áitiúla.
Bhi Cluichí Oilimpeacha 2004 in Aithín le bheith ina mbuaicphointe don Siúlóir rása Jamie Costin, ó Iarthar Phort Láirge. Tar éis dó na blianta d’ obair chrua agus íobairtí a chur isteach, bhí Costin dóchasach go gcruthódh sé go sár-mhaith ag na h-Oilimpeacha in Aithín. Ach foraoir géar, nuair a bhí an obair ar fad curtha i gcrích aige agus gan ach lá nó dhó le dul roimh lá mór Jamie sa tsiúlóid 50km, tharla tubaiste.
Maidin Mháirt roimh an rás mór, bhí Jamie ag filleadh ar ais ar an gcampa Éireannach tar éis seisiún traenála na maidine, nuair a bhain tionóisc cairr dó. Bhí sé díreach tar éis a pháirtnéir traenála agus an laoch Oilimpeach, Robert Korzeniowski a scaoileadh amach ón gcarr nuair a buaileadh faoi leoraí é. I bpreabadh na súl, bhí spior spear déanta as brionglóid Oilimpeach Jamie. Ach d’fheadfadh go mbeadh impleachtaí I bhfad ní ba mheasa ag roinnt leis mar buiochas mór le Dia, ní raibh an damáise chomh dona is a d’fhéadfadh sé a bheith agus anois tá Jamie ag díriú ar théarnamh iomlán a dhéanamh agus ar an tslí ar ais, chun páirt a ghlacadh arís i gcomórtais rás- siúlóide. Is iomaí duine go mbeadh teipthe ar a mhisneach agus a d’éireodh as, ach níorbh amhlaidh an scéal do Jamie Costin, nár lig don lug titim ar an lag.
Agus é i mbun traenála don rás buanseasmhachta is faide ar chlár na lúthchleasanna, siúlann Jamie 115 míle ar an meán gach aon seachtain , é roinnte i ndá sheisiún traenála in aghaidh an lae agus gan ach aon lá amháin saor aige gach 14 lá. Nuair a bhíonn sé ag ullmhú i gcomhar rás 50 ciliméadar, cuireann sé isteach 25 míle mar an seisiún traenála is faide, ar bhonn seachtainiúil.
Beidh sé san iomaíocht i mbliana sa rás siulóide 50km i mBéising, agus ba mhaith linn gach rath agus beannacht a ghuí air.
Go n-éirí an t-ádh leat a Jamie.
